FC Bayern is apparently already looking ahead to its long-term plans for the goalkeeper position. As Belgian transfer expert Sacha Tavolieri reports, the Munich club has its sights set on Lucca Brughmans of KRC Genk.
The report does not indicate how seriously the German record champions are actually considering the Belgian U19 national team goalkeeper. There is currently no talk of concrete negotiations or even an offer.
One thing is clear, however: If Brughmans is indeed a transfer target for Bayern, the two-meter-tall goalkeeper would primarily be an investment in the future. There is no immediate need for action between the posts in Munich.
Bayern will need to rethink its goalkeeping situation in 2027
Currently, Vincent Kompany has three goalkeepers for the first team: Manuel Neuer, Jonas Urbig, and Sven Ulreich. By the summer of 2027 at the latest, however, the situation could change fundamentally.
Neuer and Ulreich’s contracts will expire then. There are strong indications that both veterans could retire from active play at that point. Urbig has been groomed as a potential long-term successor to Neuer ever since his signing.
Should the 23-year-old indeed rise to become the new number one, however, Munich will also need a new backup goalkeeper. This is precisely where a player like Brughmans could become an interesting prospect. As a young goalkeeper with room to grow, he could eventually be groomed for a more prominent role with the record champions.
Brughmans enjoys an excellent reputation in Belgium. The goalkeeper has played for all of his country’s youth national teams since the U15 level. He has made two appearances for the Belgian U19 team so far and even serves as captain there.
At the club level as well, the young goalkeeper has already gained experience at several renowned youth academies.
Liverpool is also interested in Brughmans
In his youth, Brughmans played for Royal Antwerp and PSV Eindhoven, among others. In 2022, he transferred from Eindhoven to Genk on a free transfer. There, he made the leap to the professional squad last season.
The Belgian has now made 15 appearances for KRC Genk’s first team. However, the start of the current season has not gone as planned. In four league matches, Brughmans has already conceded eight goals, while Genk currently sits in seventh place in the standings.
Nevertheless, his club seems to have no doubts whatsoever about his long-term prospects. Just a few weeks ago, Brughmans’ contract was extended early through 2030. Should Bayern actually push for a transfer, the goalkeeper would not be easy to acquire.
On top of that, there is stiff competition. According to Tavolieri, in addition to the German record champions, Liverpool FC has also taken notice of Brughmans.
