FC Bayern is bolstering its off-field roster with a player from its Munich city rival. Physical therapist Andre van Staa is transferring from TSV 1860 Munich to the German record champions. At Bayern, the 30-year-old is set to work in the youth development program at the club’s campus.
The transfer market usually revolves around players, but at FC Bayern, there’s now a rather high-profile personnel change happening behind the scenes.
As reported by the tz, Andre van Staa is leaving TSV 1860 Munich to join the German record champions. The physical therapist is thus moving from Grünwalder Straße to Säbener Straße—specifically, to the Bayern Campus.
However, van Staa will not be working directly with Vincent Kompany’s professional team. Instead, he will be joining the medical staff in FC Bayern’s youth program.
Bayern Signs Physical Therapist with FIFA Certification
The 30-year-old already brings some experience in soccer to the table. At 1860, he initially worked as the medical director at the youth academy. In March 2025, he then moved to the “Löwen”—who were in the third division at the time—as a physical therapist.
Van Staa has also continued his professional development in recent years. According to his LinkedIn profile, he holds, among other qualifications, the FIFA Diploma in Soccer Medicine.
This is a continuing education program designed to help medical professionals assess, diagnose, and treat common injuries and illnesses in soccer, among other things.
For van Staa, the move to FC Bayern now marks the next step in his career.
New Job at the Bayern Campus
At the German record-holding champions, the physical therapist will be integrated into the campus’s existing medical infrastructure.
There, the medical department works alongside Dr. Jan Philipp Müller, a specialist in trauma surgery and orthopedics, as well as Carsten Schünemann, head of the athletic training department.
A key focus is on providing injured youth players with the best possible support during their rehabilitation and then gradually reintroducing them to the demands of training and competition.
Overall responsibility for personnel decisions on campus lies with sporting director Christoph Freund and youth director Jochen Sauer. In the medical department, however, according to tz, the relevant experts are expected to have largely independent authority to decide on filling the respective positions.
With van Staa, Bayern is now bringing a man into the team who already knows Munich soccer inside and out—albeit from the other side of the city so far.
