Giulia Gwinn is close to returning to the field following her shoulder surgery. The Bayern captain is already training with the team again, raising hopes for a comeback soon.
FC Bayern may soon have an important player back in action. Following her shoulder surgery, Giulia Gwinn is in the final stages of her rehabilitation and has now fully returned to team training with the Munich women’s squad.
At FC Bayern’s Team Day on campus, where the men’s and women’s teams appeared before around 2,000 fans, the 27-year-old provided an update on her health.
“I’m doing very well. I’m back in team training now, and everything is going according to plan. I’m very confident and happy that I no longer have to train alone but am back with the girls,” said Gwinn.
The German national team player dislocated her shoulder in mid-April during a World Cup qualifier against Austria. Despite the injury, she continued to play for FC Bayern during the decisive phase of the season. She wore a special sling and, among other things, avoided taking throw-ins.
Gwinn didn’t undergo surgery until after the season ended. Since then, the right back has been working toward her comeback—and has now taken an important step forward by returning to team training.
Gwinn expects to return soon
However, it’s still unclear when Gwinn will be back on the field for a competitive match. Before she can make her comeback, she’ll need to undergo further medical evaluations.
“We have a few more checkups to see if everything is in order physically. In any case, it feels very positive. I don’t want to set a specific goal for myself. I’ll see when I feel ready and when the coach is ready to put me in the lineup again. I think it will happen very soon,” said Gwinn.
The Munich team has gotten off to a successful start to the new season even without Gwinn. Last Saturday, the reigning double champions secured a convincing 3-0 victory over VfL Wolfsburg in the Super Cup. For Bayern, it marked their 53rd consecutive competitive match without a loss.
After an outstanding previous season, the team aims to continue its upward trajectory. Gwinn made it clear that the team doesn’t want to rest on its laurels: “We had a fantastic season last year, and now we’ve sat down together again and said: We want to top that this season, which isn’t going to be easy. We’ve added some exciting new players—a breath of fresh air with our young players. We’ve gelled well as a team and had a good preseason. It definitely has us looking forward to more.”
