Max Eberl’s future at FC Bayern is taking on increasingly concrete form. The sporting director is set to extend his contract with the German record champions ahead of schedule. It now appears that the duration of the new contract has also been finalized.
The signs point clearly toward continued collaboration between Max Eberl and FC Bayern. After it was recently reported that the executive committee had given the green light for a contract extension, new details about the plans have now emerged.
According to information from Sky, Eberl is set to receive a new two-year contract. This would extend the 52-year-old’s current contract—which was set to expire in 2027—through the summer of 2029.
The final decision is expected to be made at the next meeting of the supervisory board on August 25. Following that, concrete contract negotiations will take place between Eberl and the German record champions and, ideally, be concluded shortly thereafter.
According to BILD, Eberl was informed even before the trip to Asia that Bayern Munich would, in principle, like to extend his contract.
Eberl’s contract extension is independent of Palhinha and Co.
What’s particularly interesting is that the decision is no longer expected to depend on how the rest of the transfer window plays out.
With João Palhinha, Sacha Boey, and Bryan Zaragoza, there are still three prominent players on the roster who are likely to be sold. Munich would like to sell the trio on a permanent basis if possible and thereby generate significant transfer revenue.
However, according to Sky, even if Eberl is unable to find a solution for all three players by Deadline Day, this will no longer affect his own future.
Bayern’s leadership therefore views the sporting director’s work to date in a positive light. In particular, the influential club figures around Uli Hoeneß are said to have been pleased that Eberl resolved the key personnel issues regarding new signings early on.
Unlike in the summer of 2025, the Munich club did not have to wait until late in the transfer window to seek reinforcements this time around. The roster was bolstered early on with the signings of Nathaniel Brown, Ismael Saibari, and Bara Sapoko Ndiaye.
This also allowed Vincent Kompany to focus largely on sporting matters during preseason.
For Eberl, the new contract running through 2029 would be a clear vote of confidence. After all, his work in Munich had come under criticism at times. In particular, the summer transfer window of 2025 and the sometimes protracted negotiations had sparked internal discussions.
In the meantime, the mood seems to have shifted significantly. The squad, assembled well in advance, and the team’s on-field progress under Kompany have strengthened Eberl’s position.
