After a historic season that included the Bundesliga title and the DFB Cup, Vincent Kompany is looking ahead. The FC Bayern coach makes no secret of what his top priority is for the new season: winning the Champions League.
Bayern Munich set the bar incredibly high for themselves last season. In addition to the domestic treble, the Munich team also impressed with their dominance in the Bundesliga and even broke the all-time scoring record. For Vincent Kompany, therefore, it will be anything but easy to top that performance this season.
The Belgian is well aware of the challenge, but believes his team is ready to take the next step.
Kompany Sets His Sights on the Champions League
“It’s difficult to get better—it’s not just about the trophies we’ve won, but also about the number of goals and the number of games we’ve won. It’s possible, but difficult,” Kompany explained on Thursday ahead of the friendly against Aston Villa.
Despite last season’s success, the Bayern coach made his ambitions unmistakably clear. “Right now, I’d say our goal is to win the Champions League—there’s no doubt about that,” the 40-year-old clarified.
At the same time, Kompany emphasized that the focus throughout the season will continue to be on one game at a time: “During the season, I’ll say that we need to focus on the next game.”
A fit roster is expected to make the difference
Kompany sees the squad’s condition as the key factor in helping the record champions achieve their ambitious goals. “To win the Bundesliga, the Cup, and the Champions League—we need the entire squad to be fit and healthy,” the Belgian explained.
With the signings of Nathaniel Brown and Ismael Saibari, the Munich club has already made targeted additions to its roster. In addition, the club is deliberately focusing on greater flexibility and a smaller professional squad, in which young players are to be given regular opportunities.
With this clear statement, the Bayern coach once again underscores the high standards of the record German champions. Following their domestic dominance, Europe’s most prestigious trophy is now set to return to Munich.
