Just a few days after the start of training, FC Bayern played its first preseason match of the new season. In an away game against SV Wehen Wiesbaden, many young players in the record champions’ jerseys were especially eager to make their mark.
And that’s exactly how the lineup looked. True to the motto “Youth on the Rise,” FC Bayern fielded a starting lineup consisting entirely of players from the youth ranks, with no first-team players in the starting eleven.
So while Joao Palhinha, Armindo Sieb, Tom Bischof, and others sat on the bench, players like Guido Della Rovere, Bastian Assomo, Michael Matosevic, and Adam El-Chaar took the field.
Wiesbaden got off to a strong start and took the lead
After just a few days of training, however, no one could have expected FC Bayern to immediately put the few pros who had already trained into the starting lineup. Wiesbaden came out boldly and promptly had the first chance through Moritz Flotho.
The young Bayern squad had to find their rhythm first, and since that took a while, the Hessians—who are already much further along in their preseason preparations—took a 1-0 lead through Ibrahim Ati Allah (10th minute).
Shortly afterward, the Hessians nearly added to their lead, but FC Bayern then got into the game better, creating chances including a free kick by Della Rovere that sailed just over the goal.
The first substitutions came relatively early, including youngster Filip Pavic, as well as Armindo Sieb, who is looking to showcase his talents. Following his loan spell at Mainz, he is searching for a new club. At halftime, Wehen Wiesbaden led 1–0.
Schleimer punishes Bayern late
At the start of the second half, Vincent Kompany made several substitutions. Among others, Sacha Boey, Tom Bischof, and Joao Palhinha entered the game. Veteran and backup goalkeeper Sven Ulreich also got some playing time.
Bayern’s play became more stable and fluid. Felipe Chavez made his presence felt, firing just wide of the goal (53′), and the team showed more structure overall. Tom Bischof rewarded Bayern for their increased effort, converting a penalty kick following a foul on Tim Binder to tie the score at 1–1.
Bischof brought a lot of energy to the game anyway, was involved in other offensive plays as well, and was eager to take shots. Arijon Ibrahimovic and the young Maycon Cardozo also made their presence felt, setting up a good chance in the closing minutes, but Binder’s shot was blocked. Bischof also tested Wiesbaden goalkeeper Stritzel with a free kick.
However, during this otherwise solid stretch for Bayern, Lukas Schleimer scored to make it 2–1 for the hosts. In the 83rd minute, the goal finally came after Ulreich had let the ball bounce away. In the closing stages, Boey had one last chance, but in the end, the score remained at a narrow 1–2 loss.
