Following the German national team’s early exit from the World Cup, there has been intense discussion about the future of the DFB. Now Bastian Schweinsteiger has also weighed in on the crisis—and hasn’t ruled out a possible role with the federation.
The surprising elimination in the round of 16 against Paraguay has sparked a fundamental debate within the German Football Association (DFB). While the future of national team coach Julian Nagelsmann remains uncertain, personnel changes within the DFB leadership are also being discussed.
During the ARD broadcast of the World Cup round of 16 match between Austria and Spain, TV analyst Bastian Schweinsteiger spoke at length about the current situation—and surprised viewers with a remarkable statement.
Schweinsteiger Does Not Rule Out a DFB Position
When asked by host Esther Sedlaczek whether he could, in principle, imagine taking on a role with the DFB, the 2014 World Cup champion replied: “Me? I have the best job in the world right here with you at ARD.”
However, Schweinsteiger didn’t want to completely rule out a return to a leadership role. “Of course, I wouldn’t shy away from responsibility—that’s just not who I am.”
Interestingly, while Schweinsteiger has been very hesitant in the past about taking on a managerial role at FC Bayern, a position with the DFB seems to appeal to him much more.
Klopp and Völler as the preferred solution
When it comes to the DFB’s sports leadership, Schweinsteiger also made it clear who he could envision at the helm in the future. “If Julian Nagelsmann weren’t to continue, then I’d definitely say that Jürgen Klopp and Rudi Völler would be the dream team.”
The former Bayern pro specifically highlighted Völler in particular. “I think Rudi Völler is especially important right now. He has the experience; he’s a World Cup champion. I’d definitely like to see him stay on at the DFB. He knows exactly how the business works and what it takes to bring about change.”
Following yet another disappointing performance at a World Cup, the German Football Association (DFB) faces important personnel decisions. According to media reports, initial crisis talks have already taken place within the DFB leadership.
Whether Julian Nagelsmann remains national team coach or the federation initiates a fresh start with new personnel is likely to be decided in the coming days. In any case, Schweinsteiger made it clear that, in his view, the discussion must focus not only on the coach but on the entire sporting direction.
