FC Bayern Women are bringing Anna Wellmann back to Säbener Straße. The goalkeeper has signed a long-term contract—but she won’t be playing for the Munich team right away. First, she’ll go on loan abroad.
For Anna Wellmann, this marks the start of her third stint with the German record champions. The 31-year-old has committed to the FC Bayern Women through June 30, 2029, and is returning after a year with Sporting Lisbon. She previously played for the Munich team from 2016 to 2019 and from 2023 to 2025.
The key detail of the deal: Wellmann won’t be putting on the Bayern jersey again right away. Next season, the goalkeeper will first be loaned to Spanish first-division club SD Eibar. She is not expected to return to Munich permanently until the summer of 2027 to bolster the goalkeeping squad.
Rech sees additional stability
Bianca Rech, Director of Women’s Soccer at FC Bayern, comments on the signing: “We’re delighted that Anna is returning to FC Bayern. She knows our club, the environment, and many of her teammates very well—that will make her transition easier in the summer of 2027 and provide our goalkeeping squad with additional stability. The upcoming loan offers her the opportunity to continue gaining playing experience at a high level. With her experience and professional attitude, she will strengthen our team upon her return and, in particular, will be able to further support our young goalkeepers.”
With this loan to Spain, the Munich team is securing an experienced player early on who can continue to gain playing experience at a high level at the same time. For Wellmann herself, the move feels special, in her own words: “FC Bayern is one of the biggest clubs in the world—and at the same time, it feels like a big family to me. The team, the people around the team, and the closeness to the fans are what make the club special to me. It feels like coming home,” says the goalkeeper. Over the years, Munich has become “a bit of a home” for her.
She sees her stint in Spain as a sporting opportunity: “The loan to Spain now gives me the chance to play in special matches against teams like Real Madrid or Barcelona and gain valuable playing experience before I return to FC Bayern.”
A career shaped by Bavaria
Wellmann was born on May 19, 1995, in Xanten, North Rhine-Westphalia, but her soccer career took root in Bavaria early on. After stints with ASV Hiltenfingen, SpVgg Kaufbeuren, and TSV Schwaben Augsburg, she first came to Munich in 2016. This was followed by stints with Bayer 04 Leverkusen and 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam before she returned to FC Bayern Women in July 2023.
Wellmann has won numerous titles: She claimed the German championship in both the 2023–24 and 2024–25 seasons, along with the 2024–25 DFB Cup and the 2024 Super Cup. Last summer, she transferred to Sporting Lisbon, where she made 16 appearances, finished second in the league with the team, and played in goal during the round of 16 and the quarterfinals of the UEFA Women’s Europa Cup.
