FC Bayern is currently enjoying a successful sporting phase with a championship and cup win, but there are still discussions behind the scenes about sporting director Max Eberl
The future of Max Eberl at FC Bayern apparently remains open despite the double win. Honorary president Uli Hoeneß recently explained in an interview with Der Spiegel that the chances of the sporting director’s contract being extended were „60 to 40“. Particularly noteworthy: when asked whether there were still doubts about Eberl, Hoeneß answered „Yes!“
As reported by BILD, there are several points within the Bayern management that are viewed critically
Eberl was long considered to be Hoeneß‘ preferred solution. Even during his time at Borussia Mönchengladbach, the Bayern patron is said to have campaigned intensively for the current sporting director. According to the report, there were repeated meetings at Tegernsee until Hoeneß finally pushed through the signing
However, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in particular is said to remain one of Eberl’s biggest internal critics
Transfer policy causes discussions
According to BILD, there are two main points of criticism of the 52-year-old’s work
On the one hand, Bayern bosses apparently accuse him of acting too quickly when it comes to transfers and thus accepting excessively high sums. According to the report, Eberl wanted to push ahead with too many transfers at the same time, especially in the last summer window
Names such as Xavi Simons and Jamie Gittens were discussed internally, but did not meet with the approval of the supervisory board – mainly for financial reasons
On the other hand, the club bosses would apparently like to see more rigor in contract negotiations. The costly extensions with players such as Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, Joshua Kimmich, Dayot Upamecano and Alexander Nübel in particular are said to have been viewed critically internally
Relationship with the supervisory board is considered complicated
Another issue apparently concerns communication with the supervisory board
According to BILD, there is a feeling within the club’s management that Eberl often only presents his transfer and squad plans once the talks have practically been concluded. This has repeatedly caused tensions, particularly with larger transfer packages that have to be approved by the supervisory board
There is also an internal impression that Eberl finds it more difficult to deal with criticism than previous Bayern managers
Hoeneß had already explained this in September 2025 on SPORT1 ’s „Doppelpass“: „A tough job like this leads to arguments and different opinions. Karl-Heinz and I used to argue like broom bats. But when the door closed behind us, it was okay again. Max is pretty sensitive about that.“
Different ways of working also cause friction
Apparently, different ideas also play a role in their daily work
According to BILD, Eberl’s approach to his free time in particular is sometimes met with incomprehension by Hoeneß. The sports director is said to regularly go for walks with his wife and dog on Sundays, deliberately leaving his cell phone at home
For Hoeneß, who was known for his permanent availability, this way of working was difficult to understand
Eberl himself had recently emphasized once again how important such periods of rest are for him – especially after his burnout illness during his time at Gladbach
The long-term future of Eberl is unlikely to be decided until August, when the supervisory board will discuss a possible contract extension beyond 2027, according to the report
Eberl himself recently made it clear that he still sees himself at FC Bayern: „I do it with a lot of passion and with a lot of joy. And if they let me, then I am ready to continue.“
