Leon Goretzka has once again made an impressive return for FC Bayern. Vincent Kompany could now face a special decision against Paris Saint-Germain.
The midfielder has been much more present in the Bundesliga of late. In the 3-3 draw against Heidenheim, Goretzka helped the Munich side with two goals, including a directly converted free-kick. The former Schalke player has recently started six league games in a row, scoring several times in the process.
Nevertheless, it remains to be seen what role Goretzka will be given in the Champions League clash with PSG. Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlovic are still considered first choice in the center, but Kompany could consider whether the physically robust Goretzka will bring additional stability against Paris, especially as Jamal Musiala has not found his best rhythm of late.
Goretzka could be important as a wild card
A starter’s role is therefore not out of the question, but does not seem compelling at the moment. A role in the course of the game seems more likely if Bayern need more presence, strength in tackles or fresh energy in midfield against PSG. Sporting director Max Eberl believes Goretzka can do just that: „He can play a very, very important role“.
Recent performances have also strengthened his position in the squad. After his free-kick goal against Heidenheim, Goretzka said: „I’m not allowed to shoot too often, so I can still remember it well.“ It was his first directly converted free-kick since his time at FC Schalke 04.
In addition to the sporting question, the midfielder’s future is also on the agenda. His contract with FC Bayern expires in the summer and his departure is a done deal. Several top clubs have shown interest in the international. Eberl recently praised his development: „He has fought his way back.“ At the same time, the sporting director said of the interest from other clubs: „I’m not surprised that he has a lot of inquiries.“
