Bouna Sarr looks back on his time at FC Bayern – and tells a curious anecdote about Hansi Flick
Bouna Sarr never really gained a foothold at FC Bayern, but his time in Munich left a lasting impression on the current Metz professional. The 34-year-old, who only celebrated his comeback to professional soccer in February 2026 after a long break, now recalled some special moments from his time at Bayern
Above all, he remembers the intensity in training: „I was impressed by the seriousness and commitment of all the players. You can really feel that they are there to win. There is no warm-up, you’re not there to prepare, you’re there to be ready!“ explained Sarr
Curious first meeting with Hansi Flick
His first meeting with former coach Hansi Flick provided a particularly entertaining story – long before Sarr himself moved to Munich
During a friendly match between Olympique Marseille and FC Bayern in the summer of 2020, he met the then Bayern coach. „He held out his hand to me at half-time and said: ‚Top player! ‚ But I thought he was a coach, so I was a bit reserved. I later saw that it was the FC Bayern coach who had won the Champions League!“, Sarr recounted and had to laugh himself
A short time later, the relationship would change completely. After his transfer to FC Bayern in October 2020, he was personally welcomed by Flick: „Shortly before my first training session at FC Bayern, coach Hansi Flick hugged me and said: ‚I brought you here to play. I’m really happy that you’re with us. Don’t put any pressure on yourself‘.“
Kimmich anecdote and difficult time after Bayern

The defender also remembers an encounter with Joshua Kimmich. Before a performance test, Sarr wanted to know who was the best in the team. „I asked: ‚Who’s the best?‘ I was told: Joshua Kimmich. When he found out, he came to me and we laughed about it.“
Sarr even won the test himself in the end, earning him respect within the team. However, he was never able to establish himself permanently at FC Bayern
After his contract ended in the summer of 2024, Sarr remained without a club for a long time. It was only after around 19 months that he found a new club in FC Metz, where he is now working on continuing his career – with many memories of his time at the German record champions.
