Manuel Neuer’s future at FC Bayern is apparently more open than ever. Internally, there are now initial doubts as to whether the world champion will continue his career at all
The uncertainty surrounding the future of Manuel Neuer is apparently growing at FC Bayern. The 39-year-old’s contract expires on June 30, 2026 – and according to information from Sport BILD, there are now initial doubts internally as to whether the goalkeeper will continue his career beyond the summer
According to the report, Neuer has not yet told those responsible whether he would like to extend his contract. The only thing that is clear is when talks about his future are to take place: both sides want to meet during the upcoming international break at the end of March. Neuer will also celebrate his 40th birthday on 27 March – a date that could also play a role in a fundamental decision
According to the report, those close to the goalkeeper say that the chances of him continuing his career are currently around 50 per cent. Neuer wants to take his time to think about his future
Most recently, a contract extension at FC Bayern seemed likely, with the 2014 world champion continuing to show stable performances and was even considered a candidate for the goal of the German national team again at one point
However, his situation is also accompanied by injuries, with the keeper recently suffering a torn muscle fiber in his left calf during the away game in Bremen
Bayern are already planning without Neuer
Regardless of the final decision, those responsible at FC Bayern have already prepared internally for a possible scenario without Neuer. In this case, Jonas Urbig will be given the chance to become Munich’s number one goalkeeper in the future
The 22-year-old was signed in January 2025 from 1. FC Köln and signed a contract until 2029. Internally, he is seen as a long-term solution for the future in the Bayern goal
There could also be changes behind Urbig in the summer. Alexander Nübel, currently on loan to VfB Stuttgart, is reportedly not being considered as a replacement keeper and could be sold. Daniel Peretz, currently on loan to Southampton, is also not considered unsellable
The contract of another goalkeeper, Sven Ulreich, also expires in the summer. Should both Neuer and Ulreich end their careers, Munich could even consider signing an experienced replacement keeper.
