With the imminent departure of Thomas Tuchel, FC Bayern Munich is facing the challenge of filling a key position. New sporting director Max Eberl has now commented on the search for a coach and outlined the record champions‘ strategy in their search for a new head coach.

Speaking on the sidelines of the match against FSV Mainz 05, Eberl commented on the club’s approach to the upcoming coaching search: „Of course we want it to be as quick as possible. But it also has to be a good fit,“ Eberl said on Sky.

He made it clear that he does not want to „make a quick decision and perhaps disregard other candidates who could play a role“.

However, the FCB sporting director also made it clear: „We already have a list of priorities, which we want to work through and make sure that it happens as quickly as possible. But at the same time, and I never tire of saying this, we still have a season to play: Together with Thomas, and we want to finish it in the best possible way.“

The 50-year-old spoke of a „balancing act“ that the Munich club currently has to perform. Bayern find themselves in a complex situation following the decision to part ways with Thomas Tuchel in the summer. While the championship seems unlikely in the league due to the large gap to Leverkusen, Munich are in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Eberl wants to „find out who the right man is“

The rumour mill is churning, especially around Xabi Alonso, the current coach of Bayer Leverkusen, who is being touted as a possible successor. However, when asked directly by Sky pundit Erik Meijer about Alonso, Eberl responded evasively: „It’s really not my place to talk about other coaches. It’s perfectly fine to ask, but we have to do our job now.“

The Bayern boss now wants to find out who is right for Munich. „And what can it cost, can we afford it? There are many facets – which play a role in the search for a coach,“ added Eberl.

The former Gladbach player also emphasised that no talks have yet been held with potential candidates: „No, we haven’t spoken to anyone yet. We have first orientated ourselves and looked around. Then we will start talks at some point. But always respectfully, of course.“

Eberl added: „We also know that one or two of our candidates have another club. And so it’s not quite as simple as that. It’s not an easy search.“
