When FC Bayern meets Real Madrid, it is more than just a soccer match. It is the „mother of all European Cup duels“ – a classic that has made history over the decades and has lost none of its appeal to this day
The two clubs have faced each other on the international stage for the 29th time – more often than any other duel in Champions League history. But while Bayern used to be feared as the „black beast“, the balance of power has shifted in favour of the Madrilenians in recent years. A look back shows how dramatic, emotional and often painful these duels were for the German record champions
Kahn’s triumph and Matthäus‘ farewell
The story begins with a bitter chapter. In the 2000 semi-final, Bayern were defeated by Real Madrid despite a 2:1 second-leg victory. The decisive factor was the weak performance in the first leg, which Munich lost 2:0. Particularly painful: Lothar Matthäus, who had previously played a decisive role in the group stage, was absent in the semi-final – leaving a gap that could not be filled
The perfect answer followed just one year later. In 2001, FC Bayern eliminated Real Madrid in the semi-finals – led by an outstanding Oliver Kahn. The „Titan“ drove the Royal side’s attacking stars to despair and paved the way for their subsequent triumph in the top flight. It was the highlight of a legendary season
Tactical errors and missed opportunities

the tide turned again in 2002. Despite a last-minute win in the first leg, Bayern were too passive in the second leg. Real exploited this mercilessly – led by Zinédine Zidane. Munich were eliminated, Madrid later won the title
Another epic chapter followed in 2012, when the two teams played out a real drama in the semi-final. After the first and second legs, the game went to penalties, where Manuel Neuer became the hero. Savings against Ronaldo and Kaká paved the way to the „Final dahoam“. It was one of the most emotional evenings in Bayern’s history
The 2014 clash was a completely different story. Under Pep Guardiola, Bayern suffered one of the bitterest defeats in their European Cup history. A 1-0 loss in the first leg was followed by a 4-0 debacle in the second leg. Guardiola later spoke self-critically of the „biggest mistake“ he had made as a coach – a tactical error with devastating consequences
Anger, drama and bitter decisions
2017 will also be remembered – but for a different reason. After a 2-1 defeat in the first leg and a dramatic second leg in Madrid, Bayern felt massively disadvantaged. Two clear offside goals were not recognised and Arturo Vidal was questionably sent off. Munich spoke of „theft“. Real prevailed and won the title again
A year later, in 2018, it was another bitter end. Despite a strong performance in the second leg, the chances were not enough. A mistake by Sven Ulreich led to the turning point, which Karim Benzema capitalised on. It was Jupp Heynckes‘ last game on the big European stage
The next blow: 2024

The most recent chapter in this rivalry is still fresh – and particularly painful. In the 2024 semi-final, Bayern looked like the certain finalists for a long time. Alphonso Davies put FCB ahead in the second leg, but then came the late shock
Manuel Neuer made a mistake shortly before the end and Joker Joselu turned the game around with a brace in the space of a few minutes. Matthijs de Ligt’s supposed equalizer was whistled off at the last second, a scene that caused much debate
Harry Kane later summed it up: „That night was really hard to take.“
All these duels show why Bayern vs Real is more than just a game. It is a clash full of emotion, drama and legendary moments. Sometimes Bayern triumphed, but often Real had the better end in the decisive moments
That’s exactly what makes this clash so special today. The past plays a role – but it doesn’t decide anything
A new chapter begins at the Bernabéu, and perhaps FC Bayern will make history again this time.
