The Portuguese’s departure is already official. FC Bayern have confirmed that the 32-year-old’s contract will not be extended and that they will part ways after two years. Sky had recently reported that this decision had been made internally for some time and was taken by the sporting management.
At the press conference ahead of the Bundesliga game away to Freiburg, Freund gave his thoughts on the matter: „Rapha will be leaving us; it wasn’t easy because he’s a great guy and has played a lot of good games and is very versatile – a great strength of his,“ explained the sporting director.
He also emphasized the club’s handling of such decisions: „But we’ve always said that when we make a decision, we’ll tell the boys, and that’s how we’ve handled it.“
Full-backs move into the focus of planning
With the departure of Guerreiro, there is a new need for action, especially on the wing-backs. As Sky reports, those responsible are already intensively exploring the transfer market in order to identify suitable solutions for the coming season and close the resulting gap in a targeted manner.
The focus is not just on short-term additions to the squad, but rather on players with development potential who can take on a permanent role in the future and are both defensively stable and offensively versatile. The full-back positions are seen internally as a key construction site for the new season.
Freund made it clear that the plans are already taking shape: „We have our ideas of what the squad will look like in the summer, but there is still some time until then.“
