FC Bayern is on course for sporting success, but there is uncertainty surrounding one of the most important personnel issues: the future of sporting director Max Eberl remains unclear. Despite strong results, those responsible are taking their time
Max Eberl himself has repeatedly signaled that he can imagine a long-term future at the record champions, but a contract extension has not yet been a topic that has been concretely pursued
„It is striking that there are no reports on the current situation,“ is how transfer insider Florian Plettenberg describes the situation on the Sky podcast Mia san vier
The main reason for this lies in the club’s internal structures. Officially, a decision on an extension can only be made at a later date. At the same time, the management seems to be deliberately playing for time: „They deliberately want to take their time with a decision,“ says Plettenberg
Sporting success actually speaks for Eberl
On a sporting level, Eberl certainly provides arguments for an extension. Transfers such as Michael Olise or the signing of coach Vincent Kompany have proven to be a direct hit. The squad structure also appears more stable than in previous years
Sky reporter Torben Hoffmann therefore shows little understanding for the discussions surrounding Eberl: „How can you argue that his work is miserable?“
In fact, FC Bayern currently appears more united and calm than it has for a long time, which is also attributed internally to Eberl

Despite all the positive developments, there are also critical voices. Especially when it comes to contract extensions and financial decisions, there are said to be differing opinions internally. Plettenberg suggests that not all deals are uncontroversial: some extensions have been „viewed critically internally by one or two people“
This shows the area of tension in which Eberl operates: sporting success on the one hand, economic responsibility on the other
Continuity as a decisive factor
Despite these unresolved issues, many experts believe that there is much to be said for continuing on the current path. The newfound stability in particular could be a decisive advantage. Plettenberg therefore warns against a possible upheaval: „I would continue with the current constellation.“
Reports have recently been circulating that sporting director Christoph Freund could be promoted at FC Bayern and become the new sporting director in the event of Eberl’s departure. In addition, external names are once again circulating, such as Markus Krösche. The Eintracht Frankfurt sporting director was already being traded in Munich in the summer of 2025.
