Michael Olise was the outstanding man on the pitch in FC Bayern’s 6-1 win in the Champions League round of 16 first leg at Atalanta Bergamo. The French attacker scored two goals and provided an assist – and even received applause from the opposing fans
The 24-year-old once again delivered a gala performance, confirming his outstanding form this season
There were signs early on in the game that Olise was going to have a special evening, as the attacking star first set up Josip Stanisic’s 1-0 with a cleverly taken corner
As the game progressed, he went on to score twice himself
His second goal in particular, which made it 5:0 at the interval, caused a sensation in the stadium. From the half-right, Olise cut inside in typical style and curled the ball precisely into the far corner. Atalanta keeper Marco Carnesecchi stretched in vain, but had no chance against the well-placed shot
Applause even from the Atalanta fans

What happened next is rarely seen in soccer. After the stadium announcer announced the goal, many Atalanta fans in the New Balance Arena stood up and applauded the Bayern player
Videos that subsequently circulated on social media clearly show the Italian club’s supporters paying tribute to the Frenchman
A remarkable gesture – and a sign of how exceptional Olise’s performance was that evening. Consequently, the attacking player was voted „Man of the Match“ by UEFA after the game
In an interview afterwards, Olise explained why he currently feels so comfortable in Munich. „When I’m in a certain space on the pitch, the coach wants me to beat my man. That I dribble, shoot, ultimately do what I want. I have this freedom,“ said the Frenchman
Olise is currently making impressive use of this freedom – and is increasingly developing into a key player in the Bayern attack
Olise looks to the future
Despite his strong performance, Olise focused on the team concept: „We have good momentum, we’re trying to keep it that way,“ explained the attacking player
The objective at the German record champions is clear anyway: „When you’re at a club like Bayern, the goal every season is to win everything.“
However, Olise will be missing for the second leg in Munich. The Frenchman picked up his third yellow card of the competition in Bergamo for a delay in taking a corner kick. The 24-year-old is therefore suspended for the round of 16 second leg at the Allianz Arena
However, in view of the clear 6:1 lead, FC Bayern should be able to cope with the loss – even if Olise seems to be hard to replace at the moment.
