A major change is imminent in German youth soccer. The German Football League (DFL) has decided to introduce a new U21 league, which is to start from the 2026/27 season. The aim of the new competition is to give young talents more playing practice at a high level
FC Bayern was also actively involved in the development of the concept, although it is unlikely that the Munich club will enter the new competition immediately
Bayern involved in planning the league
At the DFL’s general meeting on Tuesday, the clubs agreed to establish their own U21 league in the future. Clubs from the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 can voluntarily register youth teams
The background to the reform is clear: young players should receive more playing time and the transition from youth to professional level should be made easier. Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund welcomed the decision in principle. „There has been a lot of discussion in recent months about how we can give young players minutes of action,“ explained the Austrian at the matchday press conference. The new competition is „an interesting approach“
FC Bayern played a key role in the development of the idea, with Campus Director Jochen Sauer being a member of the expert committee that drew up the concept for the new league
Despite the basic support, the record champions will probably not participate directly at the start of the new league
The main reason for this is the international youth game schedule: „It will be difficult to include more games in the fall due to the UEFA Youth League,“ explained Freund
However, a later entry remains an option. „It will be different again later, when we can use games again. Playing time is the most important thing and nothing can replace it,“ emphasized the sports director
Bayern plans its own transition team
According to the Münchner Abendzeitung, FC Bayern are not planning to build a classic U21 team. Instead, a team is to be formed from players in the so-called transitional area – in other words, talented players from the age groups between U17 and U21. The squad may be supplemented by a maximum of four older players
A possible entry into the new league could therefore only take place in the winter. This is made possible by the special mode of the competition: the season is played in two half-series
At the end of the season, the two best teams from both rounds meet in the so-called Final Four
No changes for Bayern II
The new league will initially have no impact on FC Bayern’s second team, who will continue to play in the Regionalliga Bayern and play their home games at the Grünwalder Stadion
The new competition would therefore primarily serve as an additional platform for young talents to prepare for the leap into professional soccer
In the long term, the U21 league could become an important instrument for FC Bayern to introduce campus players to the level of professional soccer in an even more targeted manner.
