Thanks to the 3:2 victory in the classic, FC Bayern are now eleven points ahead of Borussia Dortmund – reason enough for Joshua Kimmich to make a clear statement about the championship
With his spectacular volley to make it 3:2, Joshua Kimmich, who was on the pitch as captain today, secured three points for FC Bayern in the important clash with their rivals from Dortmund. With a view to the race for the German championship, he therefore made a clear statement after the game
„It’s up to us, you have to be honest about that. We now have an eleven-point lead. We’re not going to give that up,“ Kimmich announced on the Sky microphone after the final whistle at Signal-Iduna-Park. Presenter Britta Hoffmann added that such a lead had never been squandered before. Kimmich added: „It will stay that way!“
Kimmich said of his goal: „I didn’t have many options left at that moment. I just concentrated on getting the ball properly. And luckily it went in at the back. I generally don’t score that many goals now, so I’m happy to take every goal. To make it 3-2 so late on in Dortmund is something very special, of course.“
Kimmich: „We struggled for a long time“
Even though FC Bayern are now almost unassailable for BVB at the top of the table, Kimmich felt that they „struggled for a long time“ in the top match: „It was a very physical game, also a game with a few mistakes. The first half in particular was very disjointed. Lots of interruptions, lots of set-pieces, fouls. That meant we didn’t really get into a rhythm.“
Things went much better for Munich after the break than in the first half. Kimmich was also of the opinion: „It became a bit more fluid in the second half.“ The reason for this: „Of course, we knew at half-time that it would be more difficult for Dortmund to keep up the pace in the second half. They’ve already had a tough few weeks, they’ve had a lot of games, we haven’t had those games.“
