Vincent Kompany and his FC Bayern secured an important 3-2 win at Dortmund, with the coach praising his team’s mentality in particular after the game
Thanks to Joshua Kimmich’s late goal, FC Bayern flew back to Munich this evening with an important three points. After trailing 1-0, the Munich side initially took a 2-1 lead before Dortmund scored a second goal and Kimmich finally sealed the deal. Coach Vincent Kompany was particularly pleased with the strong morale shown by his team on Sky after the game
He had „sensed that Dortmund simply wanted to take their chance. We felt that throughout the game, even at 2:2 they kept going. That means they were determined to win. Logically, too. But our boys didn’t just stand at the back. We kept trying and got our moments.“ For Kompany, this high-intensity classic was therefore „a good advertisement for the Bundesliga“: „Intensity, goals, but also what both teams radiate for me, that is simply this absolute will to simply always go forward and try to win the game“
Title race already decided?
When asked whether the race for the German championship had already been decided, Kompany replied: „It’s eleven points now, it’s back on. […] Why stop now? Just keep going full throttle.“ However, the Bayern coach also knows that the title is within reach, because „we also have a good squad. That means there will be very few moments when we weaken the team. There are other players who didn’t play today who still have to help us. And I’m looking forward to these last two or three months now.“
When asked about the 18 points that FC Bayern have already secured this Bundesliga season after falling behind, Kompany described the recipe for success in just one word: „Character!“ He also sees himself as partly responsible for this character: „Of course I play a small role. I’m the coach.“
Nevertheless, Kompany knows „that the players are the most important thing.“ Nevertheless, he didn’t want to leave one thing unmentioned: „It’s been in my mentality since I grew up. I don’t really care sometimes whether we’re behind, lose or whatever. I like this statement: just keep trying, keep pushing. And if we lose, don’t stay negative for too long, just try to do the best again straight away.“
