Dayot Upamecano’s contract extension at FC Bayern is official – but the discussions continue. After months of back and forth, the French international signed a new contract until 2030. However, TV pundit Dietmar Hamann is extremely critical of the negotiations and warns of long-term consequences
In an interview with Sky, the former international openly wondered about the dynamics of the poker game. „He had an offer on the table, let the deadline pass, but then came crawling back and said he wanted to sign. But then it took another two weeks. I don’t know what else there was to negotiate,“ Hamann complained
In fact, the record champions had withdrawn the original offer in the meantime after Upamecano had let a deadline pass. It was only after a renewed push by the player and talks at the highest level that the offer was apparently reactivated – with success in the end
Hamann sees a shift in power at the record champions

According to consistent media reports, Upamecano is set to earn significantly more in the future. In addition to a salary increase, there is also talk of hand money in the double-digit million range. Speculation is also circulating about a possible exit clause from 2027. The club did not confirm any details
For Hamann, the course of events nevertheless raises fundamental questions. „I have to wonder about the business and Bayern’s negotiating style. There was once a time when Bayern were the strong club that said what players could and couldn’t do. Now you get the feeling that the advisors are telling Bayern what to do.“
The 52-year-old sees this as a problematic development. Such a long poker game can leave its mark – both internally and externally. „In the long term, this is not a good constellation,“ Hamann made clear. This could send out a signal, particularly with regard to future contract negotiations
Indispensable in sporting terms under Kompany
Regardless of the background noise, Upamecano is a sporting fixture under coach Vincent Kompany. The 27-year-old is one of the absolute regulars and key players at the German record champions. Since his move from RB Leipzig in 2021 for more than €40 million, he has developed into one of the most important defensive players in Munich
Bayern are therefore clearly focusing on continuity in defence with the extension. It remains to be seen whether the tough run of poker will actually have a long-term impact on the inner workings of the club. What is clear, however, is that the Upamecano personnel issue will continue to reverberate for some time despite the signing.
