FC Bayern is doing well in sporting terms, the transfers are working, the club is on course for a treble – and yet sporting director Max Eberl is still under scrutiny. As has now become known, his extension at the record champions is not a foregone conclusion

Max Eberl’s contract officially runs until 2027. According to the statutes, Bayern are not allowed to decide on an extension until 1 July. However, a clear signal from the supervisory board would have been possible – but this has not yet happened. „Eberl doesn’t seem to know anything yet,“ explains Falk in the podcast. From criticized to architect of the upswing
In the summer of 2025, Eberl was still under massive pressure. Transfers were questioned, the choice of Vincent Kompany as coach was seen as a risk. Agardi remembers: „It’s crazy how quickly things happen in soccer.“ At the time, there were voices questioning the project. Today, the picture is completely different
Looking back, Eberl has made many decisions that have worked out perfectly. Luis Díaz in particular is considered to be a direct hit. „You really did everything right with him,“ praises Agardi. The course was also set successfully with Olise, Upamecano, Kimmich, Musiala and Davies
However, Eberl is not entirely without criticism. Falk admits: „It wasn’t cheap.“ This refers to the expensive contract extensions of key players. Salary demands rise quickly, especially for deserving players – a sensitive topic in the dressing room
Agardi confirms: „Of course, such extensions always tend to be a little more expensive.“ Nevertheless, it is part of the club’s strategic line to retain identification figures in the long term. For many fans, this is precisely an important part of Bayern’s DNA
No clear commitment yet
Despite sporting success, the official backing of the supervisory board has not yet been forthcoming. Falk reports that even Lothar Matthäus has made public enquiries. When asked, Eberl stated: „If someone were to approach me, then of course we could talk.“ A sentence that leaves room for interpretation – and suggests that no concrete exchange has yet taken place
The coming months will be decisive. Should FC Bayern crown the season with titles, this would further strengthen Eberl’s position. At the same time, the personnel issue remains politically sensitive – after all, the long-term strategic direction of the club is at stake
At the moment, Eberl is delivering in sporting terms, but the formal commitment has yet to be made. And that is precisely why the sporting director remains under scrutiny – despite the triple course.
