FC Bayern are linked with new transfer targets almost on a weekly basis. Central defender Luka Vuskovic from Hamburger SV is currently causing a lot of discussion around Säbener Strasse. Now sporting director Max Eberl has taken a public stance – and spoken very clearly
At the press conference ahead of the Bundesliga match against TSG Hoffenheim, Eberl made it unmistakably clear that Munich want to do their homework internally first. „First of all, we’ll solve our internal transfer,“ explained the 52-year-old, alluding to Dayot Upamecano’s upcoming contract extension
According to consistent media reports, the extension is close to being finalized. For Eberl, this would close the biggest construction site in the defence. „Once that is resolved, we will have a central defence of relatively high quality,“ he emphasised, signalling great confidence in the current defensive core around Upamecano and Jonathan Tah
Eberl praises Vuskovic – but still puts the brakes on

Despite the clear rejection of a short-term transfer, Eberl had words of praise for the Croatian youngster. „That doesn’t mean that Vuskovic isn’t a good player,“ he clarified. The Bayern boss referred to the 18-year-old’s strong development and his performances at HSV, but at the same time reminded everyone of the contractual situation. Vuskovic is still under long-term contract with Tottenham Hotspur
Eberl was very clear in his assessment of the public transfer discussion: „We can’t sign every good player who the public thinks absolutely has to go to FC Bayern,“ he said, referring to his responsibility to the supervisory board and club committees
Eberl concluded with a sentence that stuck: „We’re not a money-spinner. We can’t inflate the squad like that.“ The sporting director made it unmistakably clear that Bayern’s current focus is not on spectacular new signings, but on internal stability, contract work and a controlled squad size.
