Bouna Sarr is one of the biggest misunderstandings in Bayern’s recent history. After 19 months without a club, the Senegalese is now apparently about to make a fresh start in France
Ex-Bayern professional Bouna Sarr has apparently signed a contract with FC Metz, according to reports in the French media, including L’Équipe. The 34-year-old completed a trial with the Ligue 1 club at the beginning of November, after which he remained quiet for a long time. However, Sarr continued to keep himself fit at Metz in the background – now his time as an unattached player appears to be over after 19 months
The contract is initially set to run until the end of the season, giving Sarr the chance to earn his sporting credentials again and possibly earn a follow-up contract. Metz are currently deep in the relegation battle, bottom of the Ligue 1 table and two points off the first non-relegation place
The move is also emotionally special for Sarr. His professional career once began at FC Metz, where he moved from the youth ranks of Olympique Lyon in 2009. There he made the leap to the professional ranks and played a total of 110 competitive matches. He then moved to Olympique Marseille, where Sarr enjoyed his most successful period and established himself as a reliable Bundesliga and Champions League player
The Bayern chapter as a career break

In the summer of 2020, Sarr moved to FC Bayern for around eight million euros – a transfer that proved to be a clear failure in hindsight. The right-back was never able to establish himself in Munich and only made 33 competitive appearances before his contract expired in the summer of 2024. A cruciate ligament rupture in the final year of his contract further worsened his already difficult market situation
There were many signs of a quiet end to his career. Instead, Bouna Sarr is now getting another chance to gain a foothold on the big stage – in the very place where it all began.
