The speculation surrounding Leon Goretzka’s future at FC Bayern continues to gather pace. Ahead of the Champions League match at PSV Eindhoven, coach Vincent Kompany commented on the current situation – and made it clear that a possible departure is not solely in his hands.
„These decisions are not only made by the head coach,“ Kompany made clear. When it comes to personnel issues, there is always a close exchange with sports director Max Eberl and sports director Christoph Freund. With a wink, the Belgian added with regard to other decision-makers: „And then there are those at the top.“
Kompany deliberately keeps a low profile with Goretzka
The Bayern coach emphasised that his focus had recently been entirely on sporting matters. „I’ve only talked about PSV in the last 48 hours,“ explained Kompany. Accordingly, he „couldn’t help much“ with questions about Goretzka’s future. A clear denial of a possible departure sounds different – at the same time, Kompany deliberately shifted the responsibility away from himself.
The background to the discussions is the unclear contractual situation of the midfielder. Goretzka’s contract expires in the summer and an extension is considered rather unlikely internally. Since Tuesday, rumours have therefore been circulating about a possible transfer this winter.
Atlético talks cause guesswork
The explosive news: Atlético Madrid’s sporting director Mateu Alemany is currently in Munich and is said to be in talks with the ROOF consultancy agency, which also represents Goretzka. Spanish media are reporting on a possible immediate transfer of the 30-year-old to Madrid. According to Sky, however, it is still unclear whether this is a winter transfer or a commitment from the summer.

According to BILD, Bayern wouldalso be willing to talk toGoretzka in this transfer window – provided the transfer fee is right. In addition to Atlético, AC Milan and several Premier League clubs have recently been linked with the midfielder.
Goretzka’s departure would not only provide Munich with financial leeway, but would also relieve the pressure on their salary structure. In return, FC Bayern could become active on the winter transfer market once again. Goretzka is currently playing a rather subordinate role under Kompany, even if he has recently started to get more minutes under his belt.
Leon Goretzka moved from FC Schalke 04 to FC Bayern in 2018 and extended his contract in 2021 until 30 June 2026. Whether this term will actually be exhausted or whether there will be a lightning exit is likely to be decided in the coming days.
