An individual mistake with a collective effect: After Jonas Urbig’s blunder against Augsburg, Jonathan Tah and Max Eberl commented on the role of the young keeper and emphasized the importance of the collective.
FC Bayern suffered their first Bundesliga defeat of the season at home to FC Augsburg. Despite leading at half-time, Vincent Kompany’s team lost 2-1 to a courageous visitors who turned the game around in the second half. Goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, who unfortunately dived under the ball when Arthur Chaves equalized, was particularly in the spotlight.
The 22-year-old, who was standing between the posts in his fourth league game of the current season, left the arena without a word after the game. It is hardly surprising that Urbig refrained from commenting in the media after the crucial mistake. Internally, the reaction was reserved.
Speaking to BILD, sporting director Max Eberl held the goalkeeper partly responsible, but also pointed to the collective: „When you lose a game as a team, you always share responsibility in some way. Jonas knows that he can do better, but as I said, it’s not Jonas‘ fault. We win as a collective and we lose together.“
Tah demonstratively backs Urbig

Chief defender Jonathan Tah demonstratively stood in front of his team-mate. The centre-back also told BILD: „As a defender, I’m probably partly responsible for every goal conceded. He shouldn’t take it too much to heart. The criticism is even more extreme with goalkeepers because you can say in any situation: ‚He should have jumped earlier‘, ‚He should have come out earlier‘, whatever. He shouldn’t think about it too much. But I also had the feeling that he wasn’t thinking too much about it.“
Urbig had put in a solid performance up to that point, making a strong save from Claude-Maurice in the 49th minute. However, the keeper made the crucial mistake at the following corner kick. A bitter scene for a keeper who rarely gets playing time.
It was fitting that Urbig remained silent after the game. „I’m not on duty today,“ he replied when asked – a statement that could not conceal his frustration. The situation in his position is clear: Manuel Neuer remains set, even for the upcoming away game in Eindhoven. Urbig is likely to be back on the bench there. But the ex-Cologne man has impressed at times in Munich and will get his chance to do better again.
