The future of Dayot Upamecano at FC Bayern remains open. Although there are increasing signs of a contract extension, sporting director Max Eberl is still keeping a low profile and avoiding making any clear statements
After FC Bayern’s 2-0 win in the Champions League against Union Saint-Gilloise, Eberl commented on the contract situation of the French central defender, whose current contract expires in the summer, in the Mixed Zone. When asked about the status of the talks, the 52-year-old explained soberly: „We’re talking to him and then we’ll announce it when it’s time to announce it.“ Shortly afterwards, he added: „… when there’s something to announce – in whatever direction.“
A statement that shows that talks are ongoing, but a final decision has not yet been made – at least not officially. When asked whether FC Bayern is now becoming impatient, Eberl remained reserved as usual: „We’ll do it internally.“
Extension likely – details still open
Behind the scenes, however, an extension for Upamecano is considered very likely. Several media outlets have recently reported that the player and club have reached an agreement in principle. The sticking point at the moment is said to be the details of the new contract. According to Sky, the main issue being negotiated is the exact form of a possible exit clause, which is set to take effect from 2027
French newspaper L’Équipe even reported that this clause has already been agreed, meaning that Upamecano could leave FC Bayern from 2027 for a transfer fee of around €65 million. The club has not yet confirmed whether this figure is actually valid, but one thing is clear: the record champions want planning security in the center of defence – and continue to see Upamecano as a central component
Under Vincent Kompany, the 27-year-old is an undisputed regular, brings pace, physicality and opening and has stabilized athletically despite previous fluctuations. It is precisely this profile that makes him sought-after internationally – another reason why Bayern are likely to push for a solution in the near future
Upamecano out for the time being
While contract talks are ongoing, Upamecano is currently absent for FC Bayern. The centre-back missed the Champions League match against Union Saint-Gilloise due to illness. According to Eberl, he is doubtful for next Saturday’s Bundesliga away match at FC Augsburg. „I think that will be rather difficult. He is already ailing,“ explained the sporting director. With a wink, he added: „But our doctors are good. Let’s see what magic they can do with their magic potion.“
Regardless of this, Eberl was satisfied with achieving the major interim goal in the premier class. Direct qualification for the round of 16 was „our main goal“. Now it’s about finishing the league phase in second place if possible. „We want to try to maintain this second place. Because then you avoid Arsenal and have home field until the semi-final in the second leg. That’s an honourable goal, which we still have to achieve now.“
Even a draw in the final match at PSV Eindhoven would be enough for the Munich team to achieve this. For FC Bayern, this would not only mean sporting advantages, but also relief in an already tight fixture schedule. And perhaps there will also be clarity in the personnel situation of Dayot Upamecano by then.
