The issue of sporting director remains a central topic at FC Bayern. Max Eberl has been the focus of internal deliberations for months. Now the 52-year-old himself has spoken out about his future in Munich.
FC Bayern’s sporting director currently has a contract until the summer of 2027, but the club is still looking at his long-term prospects. In an interview with Sport BILD, Max Eberl made it clear that he has no influence on the decision: „It’s the decision of the supervisory board. I have nothing to do with it.“
His focus is exclusively on the day-to-day work at the record champions: „I can only do my job and do what makes FC Bayern successful in the coming months and years.“ At the same time, Eberl also emphasised the economic responsibility: „At the same time, we have to keep an eye on the fixed deposit account.“ In the event of a positive development, he added: „If everything goes well, I would be happy if the supervisory board got in touch with me.“
It was recently reported that the position of the sporting director has been significantly strengthened within the club. The main reason for this is said to be the long-term squad planning. According to Sport BILD, the sporting course for the summer of 2026 has already largely been set – a point that is viewed positively by the Supervisory Board in particular, which has recently repeatedly called for transfer decisions to be made earlier, in a more structured manner and without time pressure.
Early contract extension possible
The advanced planning is seen as an important signal to the management body. According to this, FC Bayern’s supervisory board should make a fundamental decision on Eberl’s future by the end of the year at the latest. Although his current contract runs until June 2027, an early extension is being discussed internally. Honorary President Uli Hoeneß in particular has repeatedly emphasized the importance of forward-looking action on the transfer market.
Since taking office on 1 March 2024, Eberl has made several key decisions, but has also come in for a lot of criticism. One of the first and most important decisions was the appointment of head coach Vincent Kompany. The choice of the Belgian was initially met with criticism, but turned out to be extremely convincing in sporting terms. Transfers such as Michael Olise and Luis Díaz also fall under the remit of the sporting director and have shaped the current squad structure.
The overall balance of the past few months ensures that the signs at Säbener Straße are no longer pointing against Eberl. The decision now lies with the supervisory board of FC Bayern Munich.
