FC Bayern could still make a loan move in the winter transfer window, with sporting director Christoph Freund giving an insight into their plans
Ahead of Wednesday evening’s Bundesliga match at 1. FC Köln, sporting director Christoph Freund left open the possibility of the 19-year-old gaining match practice at another club in the coming weeks
„I wouldn’t rule that out,“ Freund explained at the press conference with regard to a possible loan of Fernández. At the same time, he made it clear what is important to those responsible: „Javi is a very interesting player. It is very important that he stays healthy – but also that he can play soccer at a high level.“
The statements fit the Spaniard’s current situation. Fernández only recently extended his contract at FC Bayern, a clear vote of confidence from the club after a long period of injury. Now it’s all about taking the next step. After almost a year without a regular competitive rhythm, the central midfielder’s main priority is match practice – something he would struggle to get in Bayern’s tightly packed squad
This is exactly where a loan should come in: constant playing time, preferably at a high level, in order to regain stability and rhythm. Talks are already underway and several clubs are said to have expressed an interest. A decision could be made in January
Freund satisfied with current loan players
In principle, Freund continues to see loans as an important instrument in the development of talent, but also emphasized that premature terminations are not an issue. „It is not our plan to end a loan prematurely. We are satisfied with how the boys are developing,“ explained the sporting director

As examples, he mentioned Jonah Kusi-Asare, who had to „fight his way in“ at Fulham, and Noël Aséko, who is doing „really well“ in Hanover. Freund also expressly highlighted Jonathan Asp-Jensen, who is on loan to Grasshopper Zurich: „He is an absolute leader, has scored goals and is developing really well.“
