FC Bayern kicked off the 2026 season with a convincing home win against VfL Wolfsburg in the Allianz Arena, where the record champions won 8:1 to once again underline their supremacy in the Bundesliga. The outstanding man on the pitch was Michael Olise in his 50th Bundesliga game.
Vincent Kompany’s team initially found the start of the new year more difficult than expected. Wolfsburg came out boldly, pressed high and put Munich under pressure early on. Nevertheless, the home side quickly took the lead: after a pass from Luis Díaz, Wolfsburg’s Kilian Fischer unfortunately bent the ball into his own goal. However, the visitors were unimpressed and equalised a little later when Pejcinovic converted Majer’s pinpoint pass with ice-cold precision.
As the game progressed, however, Munich took more control. Konrad Laimer and Michael Olise repeatedly posed a threat down the right flank. That paid off in the 30th minute: Olise made his way down the wing and crossed precisely into the penalty area, where Luis Díaz headed in completely unmarked to make it 2-1. With the lead behind them, the league leaders increasingly got a grip on the game and deservedly went into the dressing room with a lead.
World-class Olise continues his record hunt

Bayern upped the tempo considerably after the break, with Wolfsburg barely able to relieve the pressure while the home side kept up the pace. Michael Olise made the difference in the 50th minute. The Frenchman cut inside from the right and flicked the ball into the far corner – his eighth goal of the season. The score was 4:1 just a few minutes later: After a long ball from Harry Kane, Olise crossed and Moritz Jenz deflected Díaz’s shot decisively into his own goal.
The visitors‘ resistance was finally broken and FC Bayern played themselves into a frenzy, pushing the score even higher. First, Raphaël Guerreiro scored from close range after a quickly taken free-kick to make it 5:1. Harry Kane also had his say just a minute later: after Luis Díaz’s assist, the Englishman struck the bottom edge of the crossbar with a wonderful shot – goal of the season number 20 for the top scorer.
But that was not all: in the 76th minute, Michael Olise completed his personal gala. After another strong pass from Díaz, the Frenchman kept his cool on the half-right of the penalty area to make it 7:1. Shortly afterwards, Olise left the pitch to applause, with Felipe Chávez making his Bundesliga debut in his place.
Leon Goretzka scored the final goal shortly before the end. After a ball from Jonathan Tah and a feed from Goretzka himself, the ball finally landed in the net in a scramble in the Wolfsburg penalty area – the goal was awarded to the substitute midfielder and made it 8:1.
It was Vincent Kompany’s 50th Bundesliga appearance as a coach, while Michael Olise played his 50th league game and once again made his mark on the match with two goals and several assists. FC Bayern also set a historic record: they became the first team in Bundesliga history to score at least two goals in 24 consecutive home games.
Bayern outpaces the competition
The win means that FC Bayern remain top of the table and extend their lead to eleven points over their closest rivals Borussia Dortmund, who only drew 3-3 in Frankfurt on Friday evening. Wolfsburg, on the other hand, remain stuck in the basement of the table and, in fourteenth place, are only three points clear of the relegation places currently occupied by St. Pauli. However, the Hamburg side have played one game less than the Wolves.
Both teams will continue their week with FC Bayern facing FC Köln on Wednesday evening (8:30pm) in the 17th Bundesliga matchday of the English week. VfL Wolfsburg will face FC St. Pauli on Wednesday at 6:30pm in the Volkswagen Arena.
