She has been one of the mainstays of FC Bayern’s midfield for years, but it is now clear that this chapter will come to an end in the summer.
England international Georgia Stanway will leave Munich after the current season, FC Bayern officially announced on Saturday. The 27-year-old will not extend her expiring contract and will instead join a new club. Stanway joined the German record champions from Manchester City in 2022 and has since won three league titles and the DFB Cup, among others.
In a statement, the midfielder thanked her club: „I am incredibly grateful to FC Bayern for the past few years,“ said Stanway. According to the club, she will be available to Munich until the final matchday despite her impending departure. „The decision to leave Munich and my team was incredibly difficult, I definitely didn’t make it easy for myself.“
Is Stanway moving to the Thames?
Bianca Rech, Director of Women’s Football at FC Bayern, praised Stanway’s achievements, saying she was „not only the first Englishwoman at FC Bayern, but also won the hearts of the fans with her manner“. The talks about her future were open and fair, she said, and her desire for a new sporting challenge was understandable.
The European champion played a total of 109 competitive matches for Bayern, scoring 28 goals. She announced her full commitment for the remaining months: „I will give absolutely everything for FC Bayern and our sporting success until the last day – just as I have done for the last three and a half years. And at the end of the season, I want to say goodbye to the club and the fans with as many titles as possible.“
It is still unclear where Stanway will move to, having recently been linked with FC Arsenal London, among others.
