Bayern boss Jan-Christian Dreesen raves about Thomas Müller and opens the door for a return to the German record champions – but there is no timetable
Even though Thomas Müller is currently still under contract with the Vancouver Whitecaps until at least the end of 2026, the discussion about a possible return to FC Bayern continues. The emotional bond is too strong, the role of the 2014 World Cup winner was too formative for the German record champions. Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen has now openly commented on the recurring comeback thoughts – and left no doubt about his appreciation for the club legend
Müller was only recently a guest in Munich, attending the Bundesliga home match against 1. FSV Mainz 05 and taking the opportunity for a personal exchange with the Bayern management. In an interview with t-online, Dreesen reported that the contact came about quite naturally. Müller had contacted him before his visit to the stadium, whereupon the CEO spontaneously invited him to the VIP stand. „I was absolutely delighted that he was there,“ said Dreesen, who made no secret of the fact that he could very well imagine Müller returning in a different capacity
„He still wants to play at the moment“

The Bayern boss formulated a clear wish for the future, without creating pressure or raising expectations. He would very much welcome Müller „taking on a role with us at some point – an important role“. At the same time, Dreesen made it unmistakably clear that there is currently neither a concrete plan nor a fixed timeframe for this. The reason is simple: Müller wants to continue playing soccer – and that is exactly what is respected in Munich
Dreesen emphasized that Müller’s fire and passion, which have characterized him over the years, are still noticeable in conversation. This inner fire is a strong sign that his active career has not yet come to an end. „He still wants to play at the moment, he has said that several times. And that’s a good thing,“ explained the 58-year-old, underlining that FC Bayern is deliberately giving its long-time figurehead every freedom
At the same time, Dreesen made it clear that there are no agreements or pre-determinations between club and player. Müller is facing a new season in Vancouver and wants to start a new attempt after losing the MLS final against Inter Miami. This sporting challenge is currently a clear focus for the 36-year-old. In Munich, this path is being observed with respect – and patience
However, the message from the Säbener Straße is unmistakable: Thomas Müller will always be welcome at FC Bayern. Dreesen put it in a nutshell when he explained that Müller is aware of his importance to the club and knows just as well that the doors at FC Bayern are always open to him. It remains to be seen when and in what role he might return, but one thing is certain: the chapter between Thomas Müller and FC Bayern is far from over.
