As FC Bayern prepares for the second half of the season, possible departures are also coming into focus. The situation could soon change for one player in particular.
After the 5:0 in the test match at RB Salzburg, Max Eberl was directly asked about the future of Sacha Boey and reacted with clear words: „When Hiroki is back and Phonzie is back, we have a lot of full-backs of very high quality, and then it can be really difficult for one or the other player. Then it also makes sense to think about changing something.“ He also pointed out that there is still enough time for changes, the winter transfer window is open until February 2.
It had previously been reported that Sacha Boey would probably not get another chance under coach Vincent Kompany. In his last competitive match on 1 November against Leverkusen, he played for around a quarter of an hour – since then he has not played another minute. Although the 25-year-old continued to regularly sit on the bench, Kompany consistently refrained from making appearances. In recent weeks, Boey was officially reported ill, including in Salzburg.
Is Christoph Freund opening the door for Boey’s departure?
According to the Münchner Abendzeitung, there has also been internal criticism of his attitude. In one specific case, he changed his clothes too long before a planned substitution, whereupon Kompany cancelled the change at short notice. Since then, Boey has no longer played a role.
Boey moved to Munich from Istanbul in January 2024 for around 30 million euros. He has been repeatedly set back by injuries – muscle tears, meniscus problems and an ankle injury have already caused him to miss 36 competitive games. He has only been able to recommend himself in the short term under Kompany. He has made 14 appearances this season, six of which have been from the start.
A sale in January is likely. Crystal Palace in particular is considered a potential buyer. The club is looking for reinforcement on the right side of defence. According to information from AZ, Palace is keeping a close eye on developments. Christoph Freund could play a central role: The Bayern sports director knows Palace coach Oliver Glasner from their time together at RB Salzburg, a possible door opener for a quick transfer. A transfer fee of between 15 and 20 million euros is being discussed.
