A recent media report raised eyebrows: Dayot Upamecano is said to have given his commitment to FC Bayern. Now the defender has spoken out himself and continued to avoid making a clear commitment to the record champions.
After FC Bayern’s emphatic 5-0 win in the friendly at RB Salzburg, Upamecano spoke about the discussion surrounding his future. „There’s no pressure for me. I’m talking to Max and Christoph, everything is fine with everyone. I hope there’s a solution soon. I’m very happy to be playing for this great club,“ said the 27-year-old after the final whistle.
It had previously been reported that the Frenchman would like to stay with the German record champions beyond the summer. According to Le Parisien, Upamecano has decided to extend his contract in Munich. Sky had already reported that an exit clause would be part of the new contract. Negotiations had recently been at an advanced stage and everything now points to a deal being reached. However, Upamecano was not asked about this directly after the Salzburg game.
Dreesen sent a clear signal to the player
CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen had already emphasized in advance that the club expects a decision soon. During a fan club visit, he made it clear: „Upa has an offer from us, which we have also improved again. This has already been discussed several times with his advisors and now again with him himself.“ And added: „I think he should sign what he has there now. Because it doesn’t get any better.“
The bosses at FC Bayern have been making firm internal plans for Upamecano for some time. The defender is also highly regarded in sporting terms: Dreesen explained that they had made him „an extraordinarily good offer because he has been playing very well for a year and a half now. He is certainly one of the best central defenders in the world.“
The message is clear: the club wants a quick agreement. „The whole thing shouldn’t drag on for so long now,“ Dreesen continued. He also emphasised the basic negotiating philosophy: „We really don’t go along with every nonsense.“ And with regard to Upamecano, he clearly stated: „If you chew a piece of gum for too long, the taste will eventually be gone. That’s why it shouldn’t drag on like chewing gum.“
