Standstill instead of breakthrough: talks are on ice
As BILD reports, there are currently no ongoing negotiations between FC Bayern and Dayot Upamecano’s side. There has been radio silence for weeks. The demands of the Frenchman and his management have been presented to Bayern – but there is no movement in sight so far. The kicker also recently confirmed that the ideas have been clearly formulated and that the player’s side does not want to move away from them
It is also unlikely that anything will happen before Christmas. According to BILD, Upamecano and his advisors are under no time pressure. His contract does not expire until the summer – and the 27-year-old is officially allowed to talk to other clubs from January
Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund explained that there are indeed ongoing negotiations, but the Austrian does not expect a quick solution. At the press conference before the game against Mainz, Freund said: „There are intensive and very constructive talks. It is also a very important decision for him. He feels very comfortable with the team and with the coach. We are positive, it is not important whether it happens a day earlier or later – for us it is important that it happens. It will no longer drag on endlessly.“
Salary, hand money, top earner status
The sticking point in the negotiations is – unsurprisingly – the overall package. According to BILD information, Upamecano is aiming to join the ranks of the top earners if he stays in Munich. Specifically, it is said to be about an annual salary of around 20 million euros. The centre-back currently earns an estimated 16 million per season
The Frenchman is reportedly demanding a bonus in the region of 20 million euros for his signature. Alphonso Davies, who is said to have received hand money of around 22 million euros for his extension until 2030, serves as a reference. Upamecano sees himself at a comparable level in sporting terms – and is remunerated accordingly
This is a sensitive issue for Bayern. After several expensive contract extensions in the spring, a new sense of caution can be felt internally. Honorary President Uli Hoeneß recently emphasised that a clear „no“ had once again become an important instrument. It is precisely at this point that interests are now clashing
PSG and Real are waiting – Bayern threatening to lose control
What makes the situation so dangerous for the record champions is that Upamecano has excellent alternatives. According to BILD, Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain are very interested in the Frenchman, who is available on a free transfer. Real Madrid are also following the poker game closely and are monitoring further developments
Both clubs could easily meet the defender’s financial demands – both in terms of salary and hand money. This is a comfortable position for Upamecano: he can wait, compare and, if in doubt, move on a free transfer
In sporting terms, it would be almost impossible for FC Bayern to compensate for his departure. Under Vincent Kompany, Upamecano has developed into the central focal point of the defence. What is striking is that if the Frenchman falters, the entire defensive structure often suffers. The 3-1 defeat at Arsenal recently served as an example of how fragile the defence can appear without a stable Upamecano.
