Even at the age of 39, Manuel Neuer is still the measure of all things among German goalkeepers. The FC Bayern captain is in outstanding form, consistently playing at world-class level. Even the slip-up in the 2-2 draw in Berlin does nothing to change the fact that Neuer is currently the best German goalkeeper. According to the latest reports, a comeback in the DFB team is still a hot topic.
The big question is: Will Neuer stay with FC Bayern for another season?
According to BILD, it all depends on his physical condition. The veteran wants to wait until Christmas to see if he can survive the intensive phase without injury. „I’m completely relaxed. The important thing is how I feel. I’m taking my time, I have to make sure I stay healthy and perform well,“ Neuer explained recently.
At Säbener Straße, they firmly believe that the goalkeeper will continue his career. A contract extension beyond 2026 is considered likely internally – albeit without pressure. The record champions know that they will continue to have absolute security with Neuer in goal.
DFB discusses spectacular return
Particularly exciting: Neuer is also becoming an issue again at the German Football Association! As reported by BILD, there are voices within the association who want to persuade national coach Julian Nagelsmann to talk to Neuer – especially if Marc-André ter Stegen continues to remain without match practice at FC Barcelona.
Even DFB sporting director Rudi Völler is said to have already knocked on Neuer’s door. According to the report, he asked the 2014 world champion whether he could imagine a comeback in the national team in the event of a goalkeeping emergency.
Neuer officially announced his retirement in August 2024 – allegedly not entirely voluntarily. A comeback would therefore be a real soccer spectacle, but by no means out of the question.
Similar to his Bayern future, Neuer is keeping a low profile when it comes to a DFB comeback, but according to rumors, he would not be averse to it if Nagelsmann actively approached him.
Should the captain remain fit, he could not only continue his career at FC Bayern – but also become a real option for the DFB again.
