The contract extension with Vincent Kompany was not only a sporting coup for FC Bayern – it was also a small masterpiece in terms of communication. CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen was visibly proud that the news remained completely secret until the official announcement.

On Tuesday, the record champions had surprisingly announced that head coach Vincent Kompany had extended his contract early until 2029. The fact that the agreement was not made public beforehand was a source of particular satisfaction at the club.

„We’re usually full of holes like a Swiss cheese, but this time nothing really leaked out,“ said Dreesen with a grin at the DAZN microphone before the Champions League match against Club Brugge.

„The most important extra time we could do“

For the CEO, the new contract with Kompany is far more than a formality – it is a strategic commitment to the path he has chosen. „In addition to the fact that it is probably the most important extension we can make as a club – with the club’s most important employee – we were of course also pleased that it hadn’t gone through before,“ explained Dreesen.

While numerous transfer and personnel decisions at the record champions have been made public at an early stage in recent years, this time everything remained internal. Neither the media nor insiders had got wind of the contract extension – a rare occurrence in Munich.

According to BILD, the deal was finalised within a week. „At least we didn’t negotiate for that long,“ Dreesen continued. „Both sides had the will to continue on the path together that we had just begun.“

A signal of unity

With the quiet, quick agreement, FC Bayern is sending a strong signal of unity. Kompany, who took over the club in the summer, has stabilised the team in a very short space of time and established a clear playing philosophy.

External observers were also impressed by the professionalism with which the contract extension was handled. Tobias Schweinsteiger, TV pundit and older brother of Bayern legend Bastian Schweinsteiger, said on DAZN: „I think a lot of things happen quietly at FC Bayern when all parties are in agreement. They all did in this case.“
