With the appointment of Vincent Kompany as FC Bayern’s new head coach, expectations are also rising. The Belgian is expected to lead the German record champions back on the road to success. After a title-less season, expectations are particularly high. Former chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has now made this clear.

Rummenigge, who still sits on the Munich club’s supervisory board following his resignation as Bayern CEO and continues to wield considerable influence within the club, has made it clear that Kompany is expected to win titles immediately: „I wish him every success, because if you don’t win a title in a year as Bayern Munich, it’s already one year too many,“ Rummenigge said at an event in Bielefeld on Monday.

From the 68-year-old’s point of view, Kompany knows this situation very well: „He played football at Manchester City. Then they know what pressure is.“ The new Bayern coach moved from Hamburger SV to Manchester City in 2008. He won a number of titles there in eleven years, including four English championships.

Kompany „represents the right philosophy“

Bayern have had a difficult season under their previous coach Thomas Tuchel, ending their run of eleven consecutive league titles and also failing to win the DFB Cup and Champions League. Kompany was ultimately chosen after other candidates such as Xabi Alonso and Julian Nagelsmann were unavailable.

According to Rummenigge, sporting director Max Eberl in particular is convinced by Kompany: „Max Eberl is convinced by this relatively young and not very experienced man,“ said Rummenigge, adding: „I believe he represents the right philosophy.“

Pep Guardiola, the former Bayern coach and current Manchester City coach, has also expressed his confidence in Kompany. He still maintains close contact with Munich: „He said he is convinced that he is an exciting coach,“ Rummenigge emphasised. „You mustn’t forget that Bayern Munich play relatively attacking and dominant football. He represents this philosophy.“

The way in which Kompany will implement his philosophy with the existing squad remains to be seen, but the expectations are clearly defined.
