Now that at least the coaching issue at FC Bayern has been clarified with the signing of Vincent Kompany, the sporting management can fully focus on the upcoming reorganisation. However, club legend Jean-Marie Pfaff still sees some questions that the club has to answer.

After around three months of intensive searching, FC Bayern has finally found a successor to Thomas Tuchel in Vincent Kompany. Jean-Marie Pfaff, who stood between the Munich posts from 1982 to 1988, has now commented on the current situation at his former club in his column for the Münchner Abendzeitung.

„After the generally disappointing season without a title, there will be, indeed must be, a change at FC Bayern. Kompany will be busy stabilising the defence, which is not always solid.“ In his opinion, Dayot Upamecano is „probably the biggest uncertainty factor in recent months“ and new signing Min-Jae Kim, who arrived in Munich as the „best centre-back in Serie A“, has rarely been able to show his class, according to Pfaff.

Bayern’s midfield also raises questions

In addition to some players in defence, the former world-class goalkeeper also sees a need for clarification in midfield regarding the future of some stars: „Will Joshua Kimmich succumb to the courtship of FC Barcelona and his new coach Hansi Flick and move to Spain? Can Leon Goretzka become a leader in the centre again after a disappointing season for him and not being nominated for the European Championship?“

The 70-year-old also wonders whether the „frequently injured Serge Gnabry, who missed a large part of the season, is still an alternative for the new coach“. He believes the same applies to Kingsley Coman, who has also been plagued by injuries in the past and „rarely reached his best form last year“.

Despite the many question marks in the Bayern squad, Kompany’s compatriot is certain that Säbener Straße „will have a team together for the start of the season in August that will be a serious contender in the championship race again next season.“
