Now that the appointment of Vincent Kompany as FC Bayern’s new head coach has been finalised, FC Bayern can focus fully on the upcoming squad rebuild. The club now apparently has its sights set on a Premier League star for the holding six position.

On Monday, Vincent Kompany signed his contract as head coach at Bayern Munich. He can now work with sporting director Max Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund on the first transfers to strengthen the squad in the run-up to his first competitive match in the first round of the DFB Cup. One position that his predecessor Thomas Tuchel also urgently wanted to have freshly filled is that of the much-cited holding six.

One candidate who could play in FC Bayern’s defensive midfield in the future is Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, according to the English Independent. The 20-year-old midfielder is said to have proven to be the best fit in many of the club’s analyses, which is why he has already been chosen internally as the preferred solution.

Is Adam Wharton really the right man for FC Bayern?

According to transfermarkt.de, Wharton’s market value is around 30 million euros. According to the English Sun, however, Munich would have to put around 70 million euros on the table for the Three Lions U21 international. The left-footer only moved from Blackburn Rovers to Crystal Palace in the winter and immediately became a key player there. Since signing for the Eagles, he has featured in all 16 Premier League games, starting 15 of them.

According to fbref, the talented midfielder is in the top 5 per cent of all midfielders in terms of tackles per 90 minutes (3.33) and his other defensive statistics are also impressive. In addition, his three assists (0.21 per game, i.e. one assist every five games) make him one of the best assist providers in Europe in his position. Nevertheless, it remains questionable whether Bayern are prepared to pay such a high sum for him.
