Bayern have signed a new head coach in Vincent Kompany. The 38-year-old is repeatedly compared to former FCB coach Pep Guardiola. The Belgian himself does not want to be compared with the Manchester City star coach. He pursues his own (playing) philosophy.
Bayern boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge recently confirmed that the Munich club had spoken to Pep Guardiola before signing Vincent Kompany. The Catalan and the Belgian worked together at Manchester City between 2016 and 2019. At the time, Kompany was seen as Guardiola’s extended arm on the pitch.
Kompany is repeatedly compared to the former Bayern coach. He wouldn’t go that far himself: „I’ve played at the highest level in my career and I want to pass that on to my players. I would never compare myself to Pep Guardiola. He was very important in my career“.
Kompany wants to play „aggressively and courageously“
The 38-year-old gave an initial insight into how he wants Bayern to play in the future: „I grew up on the streets of Brussels, in the Anderlecht academy. You have to be a team, I want my players to have courage, I want us to be aggressive. I want us to play like that, that’s also my character. We want to keep that up for whole games“.
According to Kompany himself, he has a very clear idea of his playing philosophy in Munich: „In Belgium I coached one of the youngest teams, in England one of the smallest. What I bring with me are things that will help the players to improve. I have a clear idea and will also implement it here in Germany.
When asked about the upcoming squad changes, Kompany was cautious: „We will discuss internally what the squad needs. We want to win every game, always. That must always be our priority. Sure, the Champions League final is in Munich in 2025. But we won’t get there by talking about it, we have to work hard for it every day in training“.
