After months of searching for a coach, which was characterised by many rejections, the record champions have found a new coach: Vincent Kompany will become Bayern coach and sign a contract until June 2027. Ex-Munich player and Kompany’s former team-mate Daniel van Buyten has now spoken out and expressed his surprise at Kompany’s choice.

Van Buyten, who played a total of 34 games for the Belgian national team with Kompany, told Sport BILD: „I’ve known Vincent Kompany for a long time. He’s young, which means it’s an opportunity, but also a risk.“

The 46-year-old is certain that the new Bayern coach still has to learn how to coach a top club: „Vincent will still have to get used to the environment in Munich and the pressure.“

„I will follow the project with excitement, but the choice surprised me,“ added Van Buyten, who moved to Bayern from HSV in 2006. Incidentally, Hamburg signed Kompany as his successor in central defence at the time.

Eberl hopes for more continuity with Kompany

FC Bayern officially announced the signing of Kompany on Wednesday. According to BILD, Bayern will pay 10.5 million euros to Burnley FC. The 38-year-old was actually still under contract there until 2028.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl hopes that Vincent Kompany will provide more continuity in the coaching position: „Together with him, we want to achieve a lot at FC Bayern – and of course be successful together.“

The Belgian also spent years on the pitch as a player for Manchester City and can look back on a very successful playing career. Under Pep Guardiola in particular, the Belgian matured into a defence boss and won the English championship twice.

„Even as a player, he was a leading figure in top international football and is also leading the way as a coach,“ continued Eberl. The two sides were on the same page during the talks: „He clearly showed us how excited he was about FC Bayern and that he was keen to take on the challenge.
