Vincent Kompany is now officially FC Bayern’s new coach and Max Eberl is delighted with his choice. The sporting director is even annoyed that he did not negotiate with Kompany earlier.
Bayern searched for a new coach for a long time and received rejections from several candidates. In hindsight, sporting director Max Eberl is annoyed that he didn’t contact new FCB coach Vincent Kompany immediately.
„After the talks with Vincent, Christoph Freund and I are annoyed that we didn’t hold these talks six weeks ago,“ said Eberl at Kompany’s presentation. And to the journalists present: „Then you would have had nothing more to write about.“
Following Kompany’s appointment, there was repeated criticism that the 38-year-old Belgian had no experience as a coach at a top club after his spells at RSC Anderlecht and Burnley FC. Eberl explained: „He has everything except the experience of having played at the highest level as a coach. His style of football and how he implements his ideas suits Bayern. We want to act, with and against the ball.“
Eberl: Kompany has long been on the list
Eberl praised: „Vincent’s two years in Anderlecht were exceptional, he coached the youngest team in Europe there. Then he decided to move to England. With 101 points and strong football, they were promoted to the Premier League with a record. That’s why he’s been on my and Christoph’s list for a long time.“

The 50-year-old concluded: „In terms of experience, we are now going down the path together with him. We had a long decision-making process when looking for a coach and I can say: the best comes at the end.“
Kompany was asked whether he had already thought about the job during Munich’s search, which was constantly accompanied by the media. His answer: „I haven’t given it much thought. Working as a coach is a 24/7 job. While I was doing my job, I didn’t have time to think about anything else. Then Max and Christoph called. I was lucky enough to be approached by other clubs too – I never looked for it.“
