Alexander Nübel was surprisingly called up by Julian Nagelsmann as the fourth goalkeeper in the European Championship squad. At club level, the 27-year-old will continue to stand between the posts at VfB Stuttgart for the next two years. Will he then return to FC Bayern? Nübel has one clear condition.

In the last Bundesliga season, Alexander Nübel became an absolute key player at VfB Stuttgart. It was therefore not without reason that the Swabians fought intensively and ultimately successfully for the services of the ex-Schalker. Nübel will be VfB’s number one on loan for the next two seasons, after which the loan deal will end as planned. So will the national team’s fourth goalkeeper be back at the Isar in the distant future?

At the press conference during the DFB training camp, Nübel explained his situation as follows: „I’m looking forward to next year in Stuttgart. Time will tell what happens after that. As long as Manu is there, it obviously makes no sense for me to return to Munich.“

Nübel on his relationship with Neuer: „Collegial and friendly“

The Paderborn native then spoke about his relationship with Manuel Neuer and said: „Manu is definitely a role model for me. What he has achieved for Germany is incredible. Manu has taken goalkeeping to a new level. I’m happy to train with him here. Our relationship is collegial and friendly.“

Bayern can bring Alexander Nübel back to Säbener Straße after just one season, i.e. in 2025, due to an option in his contract. However, Munich would have to communicate this with Stuttgart in spring 2025 at the latest. Should Nübel not be back in the FCB goal until 2026/27, his contract would automatically extend until 2030.
