In the midst of ongoing discussions about the Bundesliga broadcasting rights for the 2025 to 2029 seasons, FC Bayern Munich has actively entered into talks. Representatives of the club apparently recently met with the owner of DAZN, Leonard Blavatnik, to discuss the current situation and possible solutions.
The allocation of broadcasting packages from the 2025/26 Bundesliga season onwards is currently at a standstill. DAZN submitted an offer of 400 million euros for rights package B, which includes the attractive Saturday and Friday matches. However, the DFL rejected the offer because it did not meet the formal requirements. This led to a challenge by DAZN and a temporary suspension of the award process.
In view of the threat of financial losses that could result from the delayed process, FC Bayern has now apparently taken the initiative. On the sidelines of the Infinity League in Munich, Bayern officials met with DAZN owner Leonard Blavatnik, according to information from the Munich newspaper tz. The Munich team wanted to discuss a solution to the current impasse. A potential 320 million euros are at stake for the 36 first and second division clubs. DAZN offered this sum for the broadcasting rights.
Years of legal dispute looming
The arbitration proceedings initiated by DAZN could drag on until August. If no agreement is reached, the case could end up before a public court. This would result in years of litigation. The financial planning of the clubs would be significantly affected, as the income from TV rights is a major source of funding.
A protracted legal dispute could force clubs to set aside provisions and only distribute a portion of the income generated. This would result in considerable financial losses and jeopardise the economic stability of many clubs. Many are already speculating about new bidders. Global media companies or the DFL’s own streaming platform could alleviate the financial pressure.
FC Bayern and the other Bundesliga clubs are hoping for a quick and fair solution to the conflict. This is the only way to guarantee planning security for the coming seasons and secure the economic foundations of German football.
