FC Bayern want to rebuild their midfield and Frenkie de Jong could play a key role in this. Despite earlier reports of waning interest, the Munich club is sticking to its plan to sign the Dutch midfielder this summer.
FC Bayern still want to sign Frenkie de Jong, contrary to earlier media reports. Sporting director Max Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund see an urgent need for action in midfield.
De Jong could bea solution. However, Bayern are not prepared to pay any amount for the Dutchman. According to Sky, they are rather monitoring the situation at FC Barcelona. A major upheaval is imminent there, with ex-Bayern coach Hansi Flick, among others, taking over as coach at the Catalan club.
Most recently, former coach Xavi had been strongly in favour of keeping De Jong in the team. But Barcelona would be willing to negotiate. They must generate revenue of 100 million euros by 30 June in order to avoid problems with the Spanish La Liga. The Spanish portal Relevo reported that De Jong would cost around 60 million euros.
Bayern shake-up in midfield
For its part, FC Bayern is apparently looking to restructure its centre midfield. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka were still set to play in Munich’s last Champions League triumph in 2020, but their situation has changed. Kimmich played primarily at right-back last season and will also play in this position at the European Championships.
Goretzka is the subject of numerous transfer rumours and FC Bayern appear to be open to offloading him if a suitable offer comes in. So far, only Aleksandar Pavlovic and Jamal Musiala are considered to be set for next season’s team. Pavlovic in particular must confirm his performance from the past season. If he does, a generational change in the centre of Munich’s play could be imminent.
