The end of the Bundesliga season not only brought FC Bayern Munich a painful defeat and the loss of the runners-up spot, but also a wave of criticism. Football experts Christoph Daum and Stefan Effenberg were particularly outspoken after the 4-2 defeat against Hoffenheim.

Ex-Bayern player Stefan Effenberg put it in a nutshell on Sport1’s „Doppelpass“ programme: „It was emblematic of the whole season: they started well, but somehow everything didn’t fit together. And that was exactly the result of the game yesterday with the 4:2.“

After taking an early 2:0 lead, Bayern let the game slip out of their hands and ultimately lost 4:2, which Effenberg criticised in particular: „You shouldn’t let yourself be slaughtered like that.“

Former Bundesliga coach Christoph Daum was also not hesitant to criticise. He saw the match as an alarming sign of major structural problems at the record champions. „Because it just came up that it was a terrible season: everyone thought it couldn’t get any worse. But it got even worse,“ said Daum, who criticised the club’s overall situation.

Daum clear: „Bayern must return to its expertise“

The turmoil surrounding the coaching issue and the public handling of it are a particular thorn in the side of the experienced coach: „Bayern must return to its professional expertise. That means being a football club and not a talking shop,“ demanded Daum, who takes a critical view of the constant speculation surrounding the coaching position.

He recalled how the club used to handle such matters more discreetly: „They had been messing around with Guardiola for a year, there wasn’t a water mark announcement in the newspaper every day – and now? Any coaching appointments are announced before the ink is dry on the contract,“ complained Daum.

Despite the harsh words, Daum recognises that the recent squabbles have damaged the club and calls for a return to the club’s core values. „It’s not good for the whole club.“
