The search for a successor to Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel just doesn’t seem to be coming to an end. Hansi Flick now seems to be in pole position. However, club legend Lothar Matthäus has another favourite.

Following the cancellations of Julian Nagelsmann, Xabi Alonso and most recently Ralf Rangnick, FC Bayern is now apparently working on a return for Hansi Flick.

In his Sky column, however, Lothar Matthäus was not convinced that the six-tuple coach would return. According to the Bayern icon, Flick „would be free, but that alone is not the decisive criterion. Flick knows Bayern Munich, he enjoys great sympathy from players, managers and, above all, the fans.“

Matthäus would not be one hundred per cent convinced of a return, he has another preferred candidate: „The only other coach I could imagine would be Zinedine Zidane,“ continued the 63-year-old.

The Frenchman is „a former world footballer, a successful coach, a great personality with a special charisma.“ The image of „Zidane with his aura in a fine suit in the Allianz Arena“ would therefore appeal to him. „That would suit Bayern Munich,“ summarises Matthäus.

With Matthäus, „the coach search would have gone differently“

Matthäus went on to write in his column that if he were „the decision-maker at Bayern Munich, the search for a coach would have been different.“

For him, Armin Veh said it right on Sky90 on Sunday: „When I’m looking for a coach, I call him and ask him if he can imagine taking on the job. If Ralf Rangnick says that the coaching job in Austria is more important to him, I thank him for the conversation and move on. Not everything has to be made public,“ explained Veh in the Sky programme.
