Between 2020 and 2021, Robert Lewandowski experienced the most successful phase of his career at FC Bayern. However, the Polish international failed to win a Ballon d’Or. However, rumours are currently circulating that the award for 2020 could be presented retrospectively. Lewandowski himself has not given up hope in this regard.
Even at the advanced age of 35, Robert Lewandowski has a remarkable goal-scoring record. In the current season, the Barça striker has scored 20 goals and provided nine assists in 43 competitive matches. However, the striker undoubtedly had his best time at FC Bayern.
Lewandowski himself also sees it that way. He told Sport BILD: „2020 and 2021 were the best years of my career. A friend recently sent me a statistic: I scored 100 goals in 85 games.“ In both years, the Pole was voted FIFA World Player of the Year – but he was denied a Ballon d’Or.
Retrospective honour for Lewandowski?
However, there are now rumours that the award for 2020 could be presented retrospectively after all. It would be an honour that would please Lewandowski despite the delay: „Of course I would have liked to receive the Ballon d’Or award one day. It’s not that I’m angry or wistful because this trophy is still missing. But my feeling is that it would have been my turn in one of the two years.“
The former Bayern star continued: „I’ve heard that there are rumours about a retrospective award for 2020. This year was outstanding for me, I was at my highest level, we won everything. Let’s put it this way: If I were to receive the Ballon d’Or 2020 four years later, I certainly wouldn’t play offended – it would be a great honour and I would accept the award.“
in 2020, the award was cancelled due to the coronavirus, although all relevant competitions were able to take place. Only the French Ligue 1 ended the season prematurely at the time. That year, Lewandowski won the treble with Bayern and was the outstanding player of the season.
