The difficult sporting phase at FC Bayern and the search for a new coach have recently caused quite a stir. Bayern’s honorary president Uli Hoeneß has given a sharp analysis of the latest decisions and the future of Julian Nagelsmann.
At the FAZ Congress, Uli Hoeneß took a deep look into the internal situation and personnel decisions at the German record champions. Most recently, the Munich team was turned down by both Xabi Alonso and national coach Julian Nagelsmann in their search for a new coach. When asked about the Nagelsmann case, Hoeneß emphasised that Nagelsmann was the favourite of Christoph Freund and Max Eberl: „He was not contacted by me and Kalle Rummenigge, but by the new sporting management with Max Eberl and Christoph Freund, who are doing a very good job, by the way, after we admittedly had some turbulent times in the management.“
Despite Eberl and Freund’s conviction that they could win Nagelsmann for the coaching position, he remained true to his current role. Hoeneß commented on this with mixed feelings: „If Germany is successful at the European Championship, it was the right decision by Julian. If he fails, it will be a disaster.“
Hoeneß criticises Tuchel at the same event
In addition to the discussion about Nagelsmann, Hoeneß also spoke about the challenges still facing coach Thomas Tuchel. In particular, he referred to the handling of young talents such as Davies, Pavlovic and Musiala. Hoeneß criticised Tuchel’s approach, which often tends to react quickly on the transfer market instead of focusing on the development of young players. The 50-year-old coach does not believe he can improve these players, which Hoeneß believes is wrong. He added: „I think you should work hard on them and give them self-confidence.“
The future of the coaching job remains a hot topic in Munich. With the cancellations of Alonso and Nagelsmann and the ongoing search for a suitable successor – Ralf Rangnick is currently under discussion – Bayern are facing crucial weeks. Hoeneß emphasised the need for a quick solution: „I think we will have a decision within a week.“
